This is great. I never enter competitions b/c it totally goes against my personal philosophy. Also, after getting lured into paying an enormous sum for a wine review that confused my Oregon Cab Franc for a Pinot Noir - I gave up on submitting my wines for scores, too. I only trust wine writers who actually care about wine, winemakers and their stories.
As a wine lover (not a maker) and individual buyer, Paul's take on medals makes sense. Prominent display of medals won on a bottle actually repels me--I figure all that effort and resource is time taken away from making good wine. Or, they winemaker has so much surplus the medals help with marketing the extras.
